Respiratory Therapy

Respiratory therapy involves monitoring and managing heart and lung diseases in premature infants with poorly formed lungs and adults with lung diseases. At home, respiratory therapy is indicated for patients with chronic conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), compromised heart function, emphysema (lung condition) and obstructive sleep apnea.

Treatment is provided by a respiratory therapist who works under the direction of a physician. It includes:

  • Administration of drugs such as bronchodilators and antibiotics through a nebulizer, to manage asthma and infection
  • Use of mechanical ventilators to assist in breathing and sustain life in patients who cannot breath normally
  • Chest physiotherapy to aid drainage of secretions in the lungs
  • Administration of oxygen when blood oxygen levels are below normal
